So this morning I was biking to work when the giant mass of cyclists I was in the middle of began to slow down. I couldn't see very far in front of me, but as I got a little farther up the road, I realized that there were a bunch of people on the side of the bike path handing out breakfast to everyone! Today is the beginning of a new program that encourages people to take their bikes to work and as an incentive they get passed a brown bag breakfast! Only in Copenhagen...this city never ceases to amaze me.

Grønsagen

Here are more pictures from the place I work.

The things that make this job so special are: big windows for letting in lots of sunlight, organic fruits & vegetables piled high, and a stack of chopped wood for the stove. Sigh.

Super Sunday

I love Sundays. This morning we had our usual breakfast of crepes and fruit. Then we went to a gallery downtown for a photography exhibition. This was followed by swing dancing classes (we're not very good yet and run into other couples a lot), and now I'm baking granola and about to start dinner: spelt pasta with a puttunesca sauce. What a day. I am so lucky.

Days Outside

The weather has been so beautiful over the past couple of days, that I've been outside a lot, enjoying the sun and crisp air. I love this time of year, when you can feel things changing almost moment to moment.

Here are some sweet little flowers that are coming up in the garden outside our apartment.

This is an underwater sculpture in one of the canals downtown. I love that you can't really see it on cloudy days, but when the sun is shining, the figures seem to appear out of nowhere.

I ♥ Community Kitchen

Last night I helped out at the community kitchen in Christiania, where every Thursday a group of volunteers come together to cook food for anyone who needs a good, hot meal. All the produce we use is collected from dumpsters outside grocery stores, and a local bakery donates their day-old loaves of bread, rolls, and even dessert. So much food that would have gone to waste, miraculously feeds dozens and dozens of hungry people. It is a truly beautiful thing.

Christiania Clouds and Water

Spent some time by the water in Christiania yesterday. The sun came out for an hour and it was like seeing an old friend.
....also....Happy Birthday to my dear Julie!

Day-off Bake-a-thon

I spent both Saturday and Sunday working, so I thought I would take a break today. I baked these "Pinkie-Print Jam Cookies" (I say pinkie-print because they are so small), which are tasty and sugar-free! You can find the recipe at: My New Roots.

My New Job

Yes, I got a job that pays real money and makes me wake up, joyfully, at 7am. I am in heaven.
I am the new cook at "Grønsagen", which means "The Vegetable", and it is an organic cafe and food co-op. They let me make whatever I want, because after two days of working magic, they realize that I am not fooling around. It is the only job I've had (after being a camp counsellor) where I walk away at the end of the day feeling like all I did was have fun. The people are beautiful, the ambience is super cozy (it's heated only by a wood-burning stove!), and we can listen to Stevie Nicks all day. What more could I ask for?

Today's Boat Details

I walk down to the canal on cloudy days to look at the boats. They all seem so moody and mysterious. I like to imagine the people that are living inside them writing regretful letters to past lovers, drinking mulled wine and charting their next great adventure at sea on antique maps.

I like how silly my socks look today.

Traffic Jam

At rush hour in Copenhagen, the cyclists are many rows deep and a few columns wide. Seen from above, I bet it looks like a giant, co-operative snake winding its way through the city streets.

Steel Gray Day

Sunday in Birkerød, a perfectly gray spring day in Denmark.

...and then they wallpapered

Mikkel and I bought this wallpaper way back in the fall, but never got around to putting it up until this weekend. It was a huge success, and I acknowledge the fact that I am very lucky to have a boyfriend who is enthusiastic about putting up wallpaper designed for a children's nursery.
